Gloucester seaman escapes injury in collision with barge on the James River- Maritime Lawyers
NEWPORT NEWS — A Gloucester-based waterman escaped injury Tuesday when his boat was struck by a barge on the James River.

About 11:30 a.m., there was a collision between a barge being pushed by a Norfolk-based tug boat named Hoss and a 44-foot Chesapeake Bay deadrise commercial fishing boat named Amy Samantha, near the Newport News Marine Terminal.

A deadrise is a low-slung wooden fishing boat with a high bow, forward wheel house and open stern that may also include large metal tongs for grabbing shellfish off the water bottom. The traditional boats have been used for decades in throughout the Chesapeake Bay for commercial fishing.
